Superstars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo battled back and forth in a thrilling 2-2 draw of the season’s first Clasico Sunday at Camp Nou.

Madrid entered the match down eight points in the standings to first place Barcelona, and Ronaldo would not let his team down.

The Portuguese national netted the game’s first goal in the 23rd minute, slipping past the Catalans back line off an assist from Karim Benzema and fired a low ball just past Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes. The goal made Ronaldo the first player to score in six straight Clasico matches.

Messi would respond in the 34th minute right in front of the net after the ball pinged around the area and the game was knotted at 1-1.

In the second half Barcelona earned a free kick 30 yards out from the goal and Messi struck a beautiful ball over keeper Iker Casillas to the top right corner in the 61st minute and Barcelona took a 2-1 lead.

To cap the scoring, Ronaldo accepted an excellent through ball from Mesut Ozil and was alone in front of the Catalans net for the goal.
