Chelsea advanced to the Champions League quarterfinals with a spectacular overtime win over Napoli in the Round of 16 second leg on Wednesday at Stamford Bridge, 4-1.
Chelsea outscored Napoli 5-4 in the two matches. The London club are the sole Premier League representative in Champions League following the elimination of Manchester United, Manchester City, and most recently Arsenal.
The Blues jumped out to a one-goal lead in the first 45 minutes. Didier Drogba's header off the cross from Ramires in the 28th minute gave Roberto Di Matteo's side some confidence going into the break, as Chelsea were dominating ball possession, but conceding more shots to Napoli.
Chelsea would take the lead on away goals, when John Terry headed the Frank Lampard corner kick in the 47th minute past goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis.
But Napoli would come back in the 55th minute. Gokhan Inler scored after Terry headed the ball off Andrea Dossena cross. Inler controlled the ball off his chest and struck it from the edge of the box in a fantastic shot that froze Petr Cech.
Dossena would impact the game in a negative way for Napoli as Branislav Ivanovic's header resulted in an obvious hand ball by the Italian midfielder. Lampard stepped up for the penalty kick and drilled home the 3-1 lead for the home side in the 75th minute.
The match would go to overtime and Ivanovic would score in the 105th minute on a right-footed blast off the assist from Drogba. The goal came just before the overtime break.
Chelsea took 22 shots, with eight on goal, while Napoli had 23 shots, with five on target. Chelsea had possession for 56 percent of the match.
The victory marks a notable achievement for Di Matteo following the dismissal of Andre Villas-Boas.
