The Baltimore Orioles effectively had their season ended on Monday when a loss to the Tampa Bay Rays completed a four-game sweep. As if that wasn’t bad enough, one of the team’s best players suffered a gruesome leg injury during the game.

Manny Machado had to be carted off the field in the seventh inning. With the Orioles up 4-2, the third baseman tried to beat out a groundball to second base. His leg landed awkwardly as he crossed the bag, and Machado immediately fell to the ground. Baltimore’s trainer spent a few minutes with Machado laying on the ground, until he determined that the baseball player couldn’t walk off on his own.

An initial diagnosis for Machado wasn’t available. Manager Buck Showalter told reporters that he would undergo an MRI on Tuesday.

In just his second season in the MLB, Machado has emerged as one of the top young stars in the league. At just 21 years old, he’s hitting .283 with 14 home runs and 71 RBI. He may be the best defensive third baseman in baseball and could be in line to win his first ever Gold Glove award.

Not only did the injury appear devastating, but it was a first in 2013 for Machado. He’s played in all 156 games for the Orioles.

Below is video of Machado’s injury. It will obviously keep him out for the rest of the season.
