Two goals from Javier Hernandez helped Manchester Untied to record a comfortable 4-0 victory over Norwich City at Old Trafford and progress to the quarterfinals of the Capital One Cup. Hernandez scored in the 20th and 54th minutes to put United into a commanding advantage before Phil Jones and then Fabio gave the score line a more emphatic feel late on.

The result will have been a welcome one for United manager David Moyes after his side’s recent travails at home. Following a defeat to West Brom, the Premier League champions conceded a late equalizer to Southampton and then only secured a narrow win over Real Scoiedad before a dramatic come-from-behind victory over Stoke City at the weekend. There was no such anxiety this time around. Another boost to Moyes will be the return of experienced center-back duo Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand from injury. There was also a first competitive appearance in a United shirt for Wilfried Zaha.

But it was the man who scored the winner over Stoke who continued his form in front of goal to put the home side in front. Adnan Januzaj was brought down on the byline by an unnecessary and clumsy challenge by Leroy Fer to give the striker the chance to score from the spot. And Hernandez put his recent miss for Mexico behind him to strike clinically past Mark Bunn in the Norwich goal.

The visitors had only two shots on target throughout the contest and the game was effectively up when Hernandez struck for a second time after the break. Similar to his goal at the weekend, this time it was reserve left-back Alexander Buttner who delivered the accurate cross and although Hernandez’s initial header was well saved by Bunn, the Norwich keeper could do nothing to keep out his second.

Heading into the last few minutes, United’s place in the last eight was all but assured, but Jones capitalized on some charitable defending to get only his third goal for the club. Norwich repeatedly failed to clear the ball effectively from their own box and eventually a header was directed straight to Jones 15 yards out, and the England international produced a crisp volley into the net.

Another goal was to follow in the fourth minute of injury time. Wayne Rooney was the provider with an inch-perfect pass over the top of the Norwich defense and his fellow substitute Fabio took advantage with some neat control and a good low finish under pressure from defender and goalkeeper.
