Manchester City have breezed through the Premier League this season, but the Champions League has proven to be far more difficult, as the Citizens suffered a loss to Napoli, 2-1, at Stadio San Paolo, on Tuesday.

Roberto Mancini's squad are in serious danger of missing out on the knockout stage, as they now must defeat Bayern Munich on Dec. 7, as well as rely on Villarreal to earn at least a draw against Napoli, to advance.

Edinson Cavani scored twice to lead Napoli. His near-post header off a corner kick gave the Serie A club the lead in the 17th minute.

Embattled forward Mario Balotelli evened the match in the 33rd minute when he tapped home the boarding-house reach block from Morgan De Sanctis. Had defender Salvatore Aronica given a better clearance, Napoli could have avoided Balotelli's shot.

Cavani would strike again in the 49th minute, with a low shot off the cross to Andrea Dossena, to sink Manchester City. Napoli's Ezequiel Lavezzi and Marek Hamsik were key to the attack.

Manchester City took 17 shots, with eight on goal, while Napoli took 13 shots, with five on goal. City dominated possession (70 percent).
