Real Madrid went on a scoring barrage to thump Malaga in a wild La Liga match on Wednesday night at Santiago Bernabeu, 6-2.
Martin Demichelis and Sergio Sanchez were each red carded to leave Malaga with nine men. The score could have been much worse, after Sanchez was booked for a straight red in the 21st minute and Cristiano Ronaldo failed to convert the penalty kick. Demichelis received his second yellow in the 73rd minute.
Raul Abiol got the scoring started with a header in the third minute off an assist from Luka Modric.
Malaga would even the score in the 15th minute with a left-footed shot from Roque Santa Cruz.
Ronaldo, who has been rumored to be on his way to Manchester United this summer, gave Los Blancos the lead for good in the 26th minute off a free kick. His strike was followed by a left-footed score from Mesut Ozil from outside the box in the 33rd minute, as the potent Real Madrid offense victimized goalkeeper Wilfredo Caballero in the first half.
Malaga's Vitorino Antunes’s shot from distance in the 36th minute cut the lead to 3-2, but Real Madrid took it from there.
Karim Benzema would score just before the half against substitute goalkeeper Carlos Kameni, and Modric would follow that up with a fine strike in the 63rd minute. Winger Angel di Maria would add the final goal of the match with a score in stoppage time.
Real Madrid finished with 20 shots in the match, with nine on target, while Malaga took nine shots with three on goal. Madrid controlled possession for 59 percent of the match.
Jose Mourinho’s side now have 80 points on the season, and own an eight-point lead on third-place Atletico Madrid with three games remaining.
