ESPN commentator and columnist Rob Parker questioned Washington Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III’s race Thursday, sparking controversy and an inquiry by his employers.

Parker questioned whether the Washington Redskins rookie sensation was a "brother or a cornball brother" during a segment of ESPN's popular show "First Take." (The video below shows Parker's comments.)

Later Thursday, ESPN released a statement: "The comments were inappropriate and we are evaluating our next steps."

It is currently unknown if the network will suspend, fire, or keep Parker on the air.

Griffin has dealt with questions about race before, and last week stated his being African-American has nothing to do with his play.

"I don't play too much into the color game, because I don't want to be the best African American quarterback," Griffin said according to the Washington Post. "I want to be the best quarterback."

So far he's proving to be one of the best in the NFL, leading the league in passer rating and has the 7-6 Redskins in the hunt for the playoffs.
