German car-maker Volkswagen said that sales of its brand vehicles increased over eight per cent in the first quarter of 2008 to 920,000 units. Overall growth for the European car market is currently 1.8 per cent.

The company said that sales rose eight per cent in Germany to 121,000, but also reported a strong showing from emerging markets such as China, Brazil and Argentina.

Martin Stangenberg, sales and marketing chief for Volkswagen said, The overall market is developing positively, reports Reuters. Stangenberg also said that whether the growth would continue throughout the year was an open question.
