The Walking Dead
“The Walking Dead” Season 6, episode 15, saw Dwight (Austin Amelio) shoot Daryl (Norman Reedus), prompting viewers to wonder if the character survived. AMC

If you’re a fan of “The Walking Dead,” you’re probably still freaking out about the intense cliffhanger that Sunday’s episode left off on. With a main character’s life hanging in the balance, the two stars featured in the shocking moment are both speaking out about what it means for the future of the AMC cult zombie series.

[SPOILER ALERT: The remainder of his article will discuss the penultimate episode of Season 6.]

Episode 15 saw Glenn (Steven Yeun) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) get captured by Dwight (Austin Amelio) and the Saviors. It looked like Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Rosita (Christian Serratos) were going to save them, but they ended up getting surrounded themselves. Daryl has had a bone to pick with Dwight since he stole his motorcycle and crossbow and used the latter to murder Denise (Merritt Wever) in cold blood. The episode ended with Dwight firing the weapon pointed at Daryl as blood splattered and the camera cut to black.

“You’ll be all right,” Dwight’s voice says before the closing credits, prompting fans everywhere to wonder if he’s telling the truth and that the beloved Daryl will live to fight another day.

“Well, it’s exactly what you see. I mean, that’s Daryl’s blood that you see. That’s exactly what happens, exactly what you see. So that’s the world that we live in,” Reedus told Entertainment Weekly. “The fight between Daryl and Dwight is very real — that sort of fight on who you are and who you’re becoming and what you’ve given up is very real right now, and I think Daryl’s making that as real as possible with him. He’s forcing him into that eyeball to eyeball right now.”

For years, Daryl Dixon has worked his way into the hearts of “The Walking Dead” viewers, having gone on arguably the greatest character arc of anyone. As a result, fans on social media have repeatedly threatened to riot were he to be killed off. So, while Reedus is happy to leave the fate of his character shrouded in mystery, the actor playing the man who may have killed him isn’t messing around with irate fans.

“He doesn’t have an intention of killing him,” Amelio told Tech Insider. “[Dwight has] been through a rough patch, and I think he wants to show that he means business and he knows that by shooting him he gets his point across. I could have gone for the head. I didn’t. I went for the right shoulder. He’s not going to die. He’ll be OK.”

There’s the frank answer to the question. But it’s worth mentioning that Amelio is only saying the shot that ended episode 15 won’t be what leads to Daryl’s demise. However, he’s been captured by the Saviors and a very angry Dwight. As a result, there’s no telling if the character, or anyone else on the show for that matter, will survive through the Season 6 finale when it airs on April 3. After all, the finale will also mark the highly anticipated arrival of Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), and many expect the body count to increase with his arrival.
