Andrew Lincoln teases “exciting” things ahead for Rick and “The Walking Dead” cast in the Season 7 finale. AMC

“The Walking Dead” star Andrew Lincoln has an update for fans of the AMC series. The bad news is there are only two episodes left in Season 7 — the good news is it’s going out on a high note.

Lincoln, who plays The Survivors leader (depending who you ask) Rick Grimes, told Entertainment Weekly he “did a little jig” after reading the script. Unlike previous “The Walking Dead” finales, Season 7’s last episode is full of “energy and excitement.” Lincoln said he and his co-stars were ready to start filming Season 8 right then and there.

“There’s a palpable sense of energy and excitement in that final episode,” he told EW. “I think that the crew felt it, this sort of brilliancy. And it was weird because it was the end of a long season and yet everybody was sort of champing at the bit to keep going. I’ve never felt that before in the show. Everybody was like, ‘Yeah, darn it, let’s do Season 8 now!’ It was a really unique situation and everybody felt it. So I think if we get it right, it will be an incredibly satisfying ending to Season 7.”

Lincoln was quiet about what would go down when Season 7 of “The Walking Dead” comes to a close and he wasn’t alone. Showrunner Scott M. Gimple previously dropped a few hints about the finale, saying it is “everything.” He promised excitement, emotion and more, but the best part? No cliffhangers.

“It is everything and the kitchen sink. It is exciting and it’s very emotional and I believe it’s funny in a couple parts, and it builds and builds and builds and it explodes,” he told EW in an earlier interview. “And thought it promises more — because there is a whole lot to get to — there is an ending. It really is just a huge episode inasmuch as it has all of the flavors of this season.”

We’re not sure what to make of that, but we’ve got a few ideas. Lincoln and Gimple may be alluding to The Survivors finally getting the upper hand. In Season 7, episode 14 of “The Walking Dead,” viewers saw Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Rosita (Christian Serratos) make headway on their mission — will they kill Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) before the show comes to a close?

If not Sasha and Rosita, perhaps Rick, Daryl (Norman Reedus) and the gang will finally get their chance. Rick has been expanding his forces, focusing on training and searching high and low for weapons. He and The Survivors may win the war they’ve been bracing for all season long.

You’ll have to tune in Sundays on AMC to find out.
