Stocks briefly added to gains on Monday after data showed contracts for pending homes unexpectedly rose in February and a March gauge of the U.S. economy's services sector hit its highest level since April 2006.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> gained 35.82 points, or 0.33 percent, to 10,962.89. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> added 5.53 points, or 0.47 percent, to 1,183.63. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> advanced 16.39 points, or 0.68 percent, to 2,418.97.
