Stocks suffered their biggest one-day drop in nearly three weeks on Tuesday after a sharp drop in consumer confidence heightened worries over a vulnerable part of the economy.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was down 100.97 points, or 0.97 percent, to close at 10,282.41, according to the latest available figures. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> fell 13.39 points, or 1.21 percent, to close at 1,094.62. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> lost 28.59 points, or 1.28 percent, to end at 2,213.44.
