Stocks rose sharply on Tuesday as Citigroup's reassurances on its performance and Washington's efforts to tackle the economic slide made investors optimistic.

* The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> jumped 267.22 points, or 4.08 percent, to 6,814.27. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> gained 30.87 points, or 4.56 percent, to 707.40. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> added 64.42 points, or 5.08 percent, to 1,333.06.
