Stocks fell on Tuesday, giving back some of the previous session's big gains, as investors paused to reassess the likely success of the government's bank rescue plan.

Top drags included banks; the KBW bank index <.BKX> fell 7.3 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> dropped 115.57 points, or 1.49 percent, to close unofficially at 7,660.29. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> dropped 16.76 points, or 2.04 percent, to 806.16. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> dropped 38.98 points, or 2.51 percent, to 1,516.79.
