U.S. stocks eked out a gain on Tuesday as investors looked ahead to earnings from big banks and tech bellwethers, even as disappointing revenue from Alcoa Inc acted as a headwind.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> added 13.45 points, or 0.12 percent, to 11,019.42. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> edged up 0.82 point, or 0.07 percent, at 1,197.30. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> advanced 8.12 points, or 0.33 percent, to 2,465.99.
