Stocks rose on Monday as commodity-related shares rebounded from last week's collapse, masking deeper doubts about what will sustain the market's long-term strength.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was up 46.09 points, or 0.36 percent, at 12,684.83. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was up 6.09 points, or 0.45 percent, at 1,346.29. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was up 15.69 points, or 0.55 percent, at 2,843.25.

Preliminary data showed the composite daily volume on NYSE, Amex and Nasdaq was at 5.6 billion shares after Citigroup's reverse stock split.
