Stocks ended little changed after paring gains of more than 1 percent late in the day on Thursday amid concerns about overseas debt problems.

European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet said euro- zone states must be more responsible for their financial situation.

Based on the latest available data, the Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was up 5.06 points, or 0.05 percent, to end unofficially at 10,841.21. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was down 1.99 points, or 0.17 percent, to finish unofficially at 1,165.73. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was down 1.35 points, or 0.06 percent, to close unofficially at 2,397.41.
