Stocks fell on Wednesday as Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's comment that the economy faces unusually uncertain prospects unsettled already skittish investors.

Based on the latest available figures, the Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> closed down 109.43 points, or 1.07 percent, at 10,120.53. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was down 13.90 points, or 1.28 percent, at 1,069.58. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was down 35.16 points, or 1.58 percent, at 2,187.33.
