Stocks fell sharply heading into the close on Tuesday as energy shares dropped on news that the United States has launched a civil and criminal investigation in the BP Plc oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> dropped 65.75 points, or 0.65 percent, to 10,070.88. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> dropped 13.84 points, or 1.27 percent, to 1,075.57. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> dropped 24.00 points, or 1.06 percent, to 2,233.04.
