U.S. stocks fell in choppy trading on Friday as a drop in energy and financial shares derailed earlier optimism from a stronger-than-expected consumer sentiment report.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> fell 33.29 points, or 0.40 percent, to 8,298.03. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> slipped 7.50 points, or 0.84 percent, to 885.57. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> shed 2.81 points, or 0.17 percent, at 1,686.40.
