Stocks extended gains on Thursday after three days of losses as data on the job market and regional manufacturing revived hopes that the recession-hit economy is stabilizing.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> climbed 91.83 points, or 1.08 percent, to 8,589.01. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> rose 10.40 points, or 1.14 percent, to 921.11. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> gained 6.98 points, or 0.39 percent, to 1,815.04.
