U.S. stocks turned negative on Tuesday as shares of financial services and energy companies slipped, derailing an earlier advance that followed some reassuring economic reports.
A dearth of volume exaggerated market swings in a holiday-shortened week.
The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was down 16.40 points, or 0.15 percent, at 10,879.46. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was down 3.11 points, or 0.27 percent, at 1,170.11. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was down 4.79 points, or 0.20 percent, at 2,399.57.
