The Dow and S&P 500 edged up at the opening on Friday after U.S. April inflation data was in line with expectations, helping investors reassess the recent volatility in the commodities market.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was up 10.93 points, or 0.09 percent, at 12,706.85. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was up 1.10 points, or 0.08 percent, at 1,349.75. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was down 4.87 points, or 0.17 percent, at 2,858.17.
