Stocks remained lower on Thursday after a regional Federal Reserve survey, a snapshot of business conditions in the U.S. mid-Atlantic region, was below expectations.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> dropped 104.42 points, or 1.24 percent, to 8,317.62. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> slid 10.37 points, or 1.15 percent, to 893.10. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> fell 14.83 points, or 0.86 percent, to 1,713.01.
