U.S. stocks gained on Tuesday, overcoming weak Citigroup results and concerns circling Apple after news of Chief Executive Steve Jobs' medical leave.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> gained 50.55 points, or 0.43 percent, to end unofficially at 11,837.93. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> rose 1.78 points, or 0.14 percent, to finish unofficially at 1,295.02. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> added 10.55 points, or 0.38 percent, to close unofficially at 2,765.85.
