Stocks rose on Tuesday, rebounding after sharp losses in the previous session as better-than-expected results from big retailers encouraged investors to step back into the market.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> added 82.07 points, or 0.90 percent, to 9,217.41. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> gained 9.92 points, or 1.01 percent, to 989.65. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> rose 25.08 points, or 1.30 percent, to 1,955.92.
