Stocks slid further on Thursday, sending indexes down more than 1 percent, as investors sold off financial shares on worries about the fate of the beleaguered banking sector and signs that the recession is deepening.

* Financial sector drags included Bank of America , down 13.3 percent to $3.96, and Citigroup , off 13.1 percent at $2.52.

* The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was down 83.39 points, or 1.10 percent, at 7,472.24. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was down 8.79 points, or 1.11 percent, at 779.63. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was down 22.16 points, or 1.51 percent, at 1,445.81.
