Stocks cut losses on Tuesday to trade flat as brokerage comments on banks lifted the sector, offsetting worries about the impact of rising Treasury yields on the housing market.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> dipped 4.77 points, or 0.04 percent, to 10,968.78. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> added 0.87 points, or 0.07 percent, to 1,188.31.
