Stocks extended their losses on Monday, as retailers faltered and investors booked profits on the heels of a four-week rally.

The decline came after a sharp advance in Friday's session, when better-than-expected July employment data pushed the broad S&P 500 to a 10-month high.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> fell 77.46 points, or 0.83 percent, to 9,292.61. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> lost 9.45 points, or 0.94 percent, to 1,001.03. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> slid 20.68 points, or 1.03 percent, to 1,979.57.
