U.S. stocks relinquished gains on Wednesday, with the Dow and S&P briefly turning negative on weakness in energy and gold stocks.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 11.89 points, or 0.11 percent, to 11,188.65. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index added 1.10 points, or 0.09 percent, to 1,163.45. The Nasdaq Composite Index dropped 10.18 points, or 0.42 percent, to 2,435.88.
