A 10-year-old boy has been taken into custody Thursday after he stole a car belonging to his mother's boyfriend before school and led the police and state troopers on a 45-mile high-speed chase that almost topped 100 mph. The boy was blocked by troopers along the Ohio Turnpike after he drove into a ditch to avoid spike strips on the road.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol dash camera video of the entire incident and the boy's arrest thereafter showed the preteen driving on the opposite side of a metal barrier on the side of the Ohio Turnpike in Milan in order to avoid the spike strips, thus delaying the trailing police cruisers behind him.

The troopers stopped the boy's car and boxed him in. Meanwhile, one cruiser struck the back of the driver's side of the car, causing him to turn sharply toward the highway from the ditch where the boy’s car hit another cruiser, finally ending the almost 20 miles-long chase.

The troopers pulled the boy out of the wrecked car through the window. The boy report0edly kicked at the troopers and spit on them off camera, State Patrol Lt. Richar Reeder told Cleveland.com.

He was then led back to one of the cruisers in handcuffs. He was taken to a hospital by a legal guardian and will be placed in the custody of Erie County Children’s Services before being evaluated. Ohio Highway Patrol told the New York Post that it will consult with the Erie County Prosecutor’s Office about criminal charges against the boy.

The incident began around 8:30 a.m. EDT on Thursday when the boy reportedly waited for his sister to take him to school. He took the car when his sister was still in the shower. Police said the boy's mother followed his car immediately after he took off and called 911 as he drove on West 117th Street, then on Interstate 90 westbound. Another woman also called 911 and said that the boy appeared to be driving at around a speed of 90mph.

Police said the state patrol picked up the chase when the boy entered Interstate 80. At one point, a trooper also pulled up next to the boy and motioned for him to stop, but he did not comply and continued driving.

Highway Patrol Sergeant Tim Hoffman said the troopers tried to block the boy's car but he then began driving erratically along the turnpike. After a pursuit of almost 20 miles, he slowed down and went into the grassy area to avoid the spike strips. That's when one trooper forced the boy's car at a slow speed into a milepost sign with his cruiser, eventually, another cruiser blocked him thus preventing the car from re-entering the road.

"It was very lucky no one was hurt," Hoffman said.
