A car in which a woman was breastfeeding her seven-month-old baby was towed Friday by a policeman in Mumbai, India, sparking outrage across the country.

Jyoti Male, who was sitting in the rear seat with her infant, requested the policeman to stop towing her car, but the latter paid no heed to her. Even when she waved a medical prescription out of the window in an attempt to convey that she was not well, the policeman kept ignoring her.

“The policemen towing the car did not even once ask me to get down, even when I told them that I am breastfeeding my baby they still did not stop,” Male said, NDTV reported.

Several people standing near the area protested against the policeman’s actions. One such person took a video of the incident and uploaded it on Facebook on Saturday, which has since gone viral.

The policeman responsible for the incident – reportedly identified as Shashank Rane – has been suspended from the task force. Rane was also not wearing his name tag on his uniform, which is a violation of the police guidelines of the state of Maharashtra. An urgent investigation has been ordered by Mumbai Joint Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar.

"He has been ordered to visit and conduct an inquiry into the incident immediately,” Kumar said. “The case will be handled appropriately and sternly after the report is received Sunday.”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis condemned the incident. "Absolutely insensitive and dangerous to tow the vehicle with lady and the child inside. The cop is suspended and orders have been given to sensitize traffic cops so as to prevent such incidents."

The woman said that even though there were other vehicles around the area, the policeman chose to tow her car.
