Janielle, 12, and Elijah, 10, never imagined they will be finding out when they will be getting adopted from iconic Disney character Mickey Mouse. But thats exactly what happened when their foster parents took them on a trip to Walt Disney World, Florida in April 2017.

The kids had been living with their foster parents, Tom and Courtney Gilmore, for almost three years. The couple wanted to officially adopt the children as soon as possible, but had to wait for court proceedings to get over to finalize a date when they could call their foster kids their own.

Janielle and Elijah were not unaware of what their foster parents were planning, but were under the impression the official adoption date would arrive sometime after they had finished their school year. However, once the parents received the official date, they decided to reveal it to the kids during their trip to Disney World.

“I got mine and my husband’s and we wrote were celebrating ‘adopting our kids,’ and the kids wrote, ‘being adopted,’” Courtney told ABC News. “I took a picture of the pins and posted it to Twitter and I hashtagged 'Walt Disney World' and within minutes they had gotten back to me asking if they could do something to make our trip a little more special. I thought honestly they were going to add dessert onto our meal.”

However, what the amusement park had planned for the couple was something far bigger than that. They wanted to organize a private meet-and-greet for Janielle and Elijah with Mickey Mouse, where the popular cartoon character would break the news.

As planned, the siblings were excited to meet Mickey, having no clue what the day held for them. Mickey Mouse first signed their autograph books and had a picture taken with them. After performing card tricks to amuse the kids, a sign was brought out that said “May 24” – the date the kids were officially going to be adopted. Neither Janielle nor Elijah could hold back their tears.

“I gave my parents a big hug because I was so excited to finally find out when the adoption date was going to be,” Janielle told ABC News. “It was amazing. They said it was going to be a magical day and it really was a magical day. I started to cry because I was so happy that we were getting adopted.”

“I wasn’t expecting them to have that reaction. Usually, you know your kids and it takes a little bit for something to click in for them,” Courtney Gilmour said. “It was something they desperately wanted -- closure on the adoption date.”

At the end, Courtney said all the legal troubles they underwent to fast-track the process were worth it. “Whatever hoops we had to jump through, we jumped through because Janielle and Elijah are worth it,” Courtney told People Magazine. “There was a lot of crying and laughing and screaming in those three years, but we got to the end goal. We got the happy ending.”

The moment was captured in an emotional video, shot by a relative of the family and posted on Facebook on July 6. Since then, it has gone viral, earning it over 1.8 million views.
