Last week, comedian and political satirist Stephen Colbert took a week off from "The Colbert Report" after the death of his mother, Lorna Colbert. On Wednesday night, Colbert returned to his eponymous show for the first time since his mother’s passing and delivered a moving tribute to Lorna Elizabeth Tuck Colbert. In the segment, Colbert explained to viewers his mother’s profound impact and influence on his life.

“If you watch this show, and you like this show, that’s because of everybody who works here, and I’m lucky to be one of them,” Colbert told his viewers. “But when you watch the show, if you also like me, that’s because of my mom.”

Throughout the three-minute tribute, Colbert described his mother’s life story, from her 1920 birth in Larchmont, N.Y., up until her death in Charleston, S.C., last week. He told viewers that even though his mother was 92 years old, he still wished he could have spent more time with her.

“I know it may sound greedy to want more days with a person who lived so long, but the fact that my mother was 92 does not diminish, it only magnifies the enormity of the room whose door has now quietly shut,” Colbert said.

Lorna Colbert's obituary describes her as “an accomplished artist, a church leader, a businesswoman, a supporter of the arts” and a woman of “profound faith.”

She raised 11 children, of which Stephen is the youngest. As Colbert alludes to in his segment, Lorna lost her husband and two sons in a 1974 plane crash that Colbert told the New York Post brought their family closer together.
