Passengers of a United Airlines plane at Newark Liberty International Airport were terrified as the jet almost took off with fuel gushing out from one of its wings, Tuesday night. The incident forced the airline to cancel the overseas flight to Venice, Italy.

Witnesses said the fuel came from the edge of the plane's left wing, but it wasn't clear what caused the leak. A passenger on board the plane recorded the spillage, following which the plane was taxied on the tarmac.

“I’m sitting looking out window at the wings, and all of a sudden fuel started shooting out of the wing really really hard,” Rachel Brumfield, 28, a newlywed who was supposed to be jetting off to Venice on flight 170 for a honeymoon with husband Mike, said according to the New York Post. “It was huge — it looked like a fire hose.”

Mike, who saw the spillage went to the crew to know what was going on, but they “yelled at him” to sit down, Brumfield told the Post. “He’s like, ‘But something’s not right.” They said, ‘Is it an emergency?’ He said, ‘I don’t know,’ so they said, ‘Go sit down.’ They said, ‘Everything’s normal,’” she added.

After Mike spoke to the crew they finally looked out of the window for themselves and rushed to the cockpit. The plane’s engine went off, and fire trucks came rushing towards the jet, Brumfield said about the incident.

The couple said they showed the pilot the footage of the spillage when they were invited to the cockpit to thank them for alerting the crew members.

“They just looked at the video and they all kind of looked at each other, like, ‘We’ve never seen anything like this,'” Brumfield reportedly said, adding the United asked them to “go easy” on the airline on social media.

The airline arranged for a separate flight Wednesday for those on board the United Airlines flight 170.

According to the Post, United did not address the couple's account of the incident but released a general statement.

“While taxiing to the runway yesterday evening, United flight 170 traveling from Newark to Venice, Italy returned to the gate due to a fuel leak, and was later cancelled. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience. Our team helped provide customers with hotel accommodations for the night and are working to get them back on their way to Venice today,” airline spokesman Jonathan Guerin said.

United Airlines had found itself surrounded by controversy since the high-profile case in which a passenger, named David Dao, was dragged off a flight by aviation police April 9, leaving him with a concussion and two broken teeth.

Among the most recent incidents reported against United Airlines is the one that occurred earlier this month when a violinist accused the airline security of wrestling her instrument away from her.

On Tuesday, United Airlines issued an apology after a video was released of a Houston-based employee pushing a 71-year-old passenger to the floor during an argument over a ticket. The confrontation took place about two years ago but was detailed in a lawsuit filed last week in Harris County, Texas.
