The winners of the 2012 Webby Awards were announced on Tuesday and price compare site Kayak won top honors in the travel categories, taking home both the Webby Award and the People's Voice Award for best travel website and the People's Voice Award for best travel app.

The Webby Awards is the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet. Established during the Web's infancy in 1996, the prizes are presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a 1,000-member body of Web luminaries, experts, and businesspeople.

Judges of the 16th annual awards doled out two prizes in each category: the Webby Award and the Webby People's Voice Award. This year's adjudicators, including Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, mobile phone inventor Martin Cooper, and Arianna Huffington of the Huffington Post, selected the Webby Awards from nearly 10,000 entries from over 60 countries. Nearly 1.5 million Internet voters from over 200 nations chose the winners of the People's Voice Awards.

Though Kayak won all People's Voice Awards in the two main travel categories, FlightBoard won the Webby Award for best travel app.

Other nominees in the travel categories included Hipmunk, Jetsetter.com, TripAdvisor, and Trippy.com.

NYC & Company, the official tourism board of New York City, took home top honors in the tourism category, winning the Webby Award for best tourism website. The People's Voice Winner, however, went to Greenland.com.

The short film From Peru for Peru won both the Webby Award and People's Voice Award for best travel and adventure online video. In categories not specific to travel and tourism, Norway's Tourism Bureau won The Webby Award for best home/welcome page for Visit Norway 360 while video blog site Sonia's Travels won the People's Voice Award for best web personality/host.

Webby winners will be fêted at a star-studded ceremony hosted by Patton Oswalt at The Hammerstein Ballroom in New York on May 21.
