Shares of Western Digital (NYSE: WDC) are soaring after the company announced it will acquire Global Storage Technologies, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hitachi Ltd, for $4.3 billion in a cash-and-stock transaction.

As of 10:43 a.m. (EST), shares of WDC are up 16.46 percent to $34.95 per share.
