“Westworld” star Evan Rachel Wood, who is nominated for best performance by an actress in a television series - drama for her role as Dolores Abernathy, chose to attend the 74th Golden Globe awards in a black suit.

She made quite the statement, but Wood clarified that she decided to go against the norm of wearing dresses to pay homage to the late singer David Bowie and Victor Victoria, the character played by Julie Andrews in the same-titled movie, “because it’s his birthday.”

“I’m not trying to protest dresses,” Wood told Entertainment Weekly. “But I wanted to make sure young girls and women know that it’s not a requirement. You don’t have to wear one if you don’t want to. Just be yourself because you’re worth more than that.”

On her Instagram page, the singer also posted an explanation of her fashion choice. She said that she loves wearing dresses, but she feels just as great while wearing her suit.

When Wood appeared on “The Tonight Show” earlier to talk to Jimmy Fallon about the show, the actress said that playing Dolores was quite different from any role she had taken on in the past. Dolores is the oldest host in the Western theme park created by Dr. Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins) and Arnold Weber (Jeffrey Wright). During the finale, it was even revealed that Dolores had an alternate persona named Wyatt.

“There’s tons of things that make it trickier,” Wood said of her role(s). “I mean you have to ask different questions as an actor. And we ended up nicknaming them ‘bot thoughts.’ Because we would have moments where I’m like, ‘Do I squint in the sun? Am I affected by this? Is this part of my programming?’ So we would always have to stop and go ‘Ah, I got a bot thought. Is this analysis mode? Or character? Where am I right now?”

“Westworld” Season 2 will return to HBO in 2018.
