It's officially been one year since the world was stunned by news that Angelina Jolie had filed for divorce from Brad Pitt after only two years of marriage and more than a decade as Hollywood's premiere A-List couple. Now, one year later, where do they stand?

The shock over Jolie filing for divorce from Pitt, with whom she'd been linked since 2005, a few months after he and Jennifer Aniston had announced their own plans to end their marriage, was intense when the announcement first broke, with several people taking to Twitter to express fears that the super couple's split meant love was truly dead.

However, in the time since the divorce news first broke, things got even more shocking and unexpected. After initial reports Pitt had cheated on her with his "Allied" co-star Marion Cotillard were proven false, allegations that Pitt had been abusive towards their six children surfaced.

Initially, reports surfaced that Jolie had filed for divorce because she thought Pitt's habits, including "consumption of weed and possibly alcohol" had created a "dangerous" environment for their six children—Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox and Vivienne. That was shortly followed up with allegations he had been abusive towards the children in the past, after news broke that the FBI was investigating one particular incident with Pitt, where he was reportedly drunk on a flight with the family one week before the divorce filing and had an altercation with Maddox.

"He got drunk and was fighting with Angie. Maddox stepped in to defend Angie and got in Brad's face," a source said at the time.

While the investigation was underway, Jolie retained sole physical custody of the kids, and Pitt was granted some supervised visitation. There was also mandated family therapy, and Pitt was required to submit to drug and alcohol testing.

The investigation into Pitt was later officially dropped and allegations were deemed false. Following his being cleared, Pitt then filed for joint physical custody of the kids. Things still remained nasty for a while, with several conflicting reports in the tabloids about both, especially after Pitt asked to seal the custody battle records. Finally, in January of this year, the two released a joint statement saying they were making the proceedings of their divorce private.

"The parties and their counsel have signed agreements to preserve the privacy rights of their children and family by keeping all court documents confidential and engaging a private judge to make any necessary legal decisions and to facilitate the expeditious resolution of any remaining issues," the statement read. "The parents are committed to act as a united front to effectuate recovery and reunification."

Jolie broke her silence over the divorce for the first time in February of this year, admitting in an interview with BBC News that it had been a "difficult time" for her and the children, and they were still coping with finding a way to handle the changed family dynamic.

"It was very difficult," she said at the time. "Many people find themselves in this situation. My whole family have all been through a difficult time... My focus is my children, our children. We are and forever will be a family and so that is how I am coping. I am coping with finding a way through to make sure that this somehow makes us stronger and closer."

Pitt broke his silence about the divorce months later, in a May interview with GQ, where he discussed the custody battle and admitted that they were still working towards a solution.

"Yeah, we're working on that now," he said at the time. "it was all that for a while. I was really on my back and chained to a system when Child Services was called. And you know, after that, we've been able to work together to sort this out. We're both doing our best... It's just very, very jarring for the kids, to suddenly have their family ripped apart."

He also admitted in the interview that he had previously had a problem with alcohol, but he had since become clean and sober.

"… I can't remember a day since I got out of college when I wasn't boozing or had a spliff or something. And you realize a lot of it is, um—cigarettes, you know, pacifiers," he said. "And I'm running from feelings. I'm really, really happy to be done with all of that. I mean I stopped everything except boozing when I started my family. But even this last year, you know—things I wasn't dealing with. I was boozing too much. It just became a problem. And I'm really happy it's been half a year now, which is bittersweet, but I've got my feeling in my fingertips again. I think that's part of the human challenge: You either deny them all of your life or you answer them and evolve."

Outside of the couple's official statements, as well as a recent rumor they had actually called off the divorce after seemingly months of inactivity, there have also been numerous reports about their combined love lives. Most notably, Pitt has allegedly been reaching out to Aniston, apologizing to her for everything he put her through during their own painful divorce, as well as for being an alleged "absentee" husband when things got tough for them. He also was reportedly hopeful for a reconciliation with Jolie as well.

He was also briefly rumored to have been dating both Sienna Miller and Elle Macpherson, though both of those dating rumors were proven false.

As of now, it appears the couple's divorce proceedings are still ongoing, and it is unclear when an agreement will officially be reached.
