Not sure what bae, YOLO!, TBT or grinding means? You're not alone. Many people are confused when they hear slang used by kids these days. That's not unexpected, of course. Every generation has had its slang and own ways of expressing themselves. But if you are starting to feel old, here's a list of 20 words teenagers love to use that you might want to learn to keep up.

1. Bae: This word is extensively used on social media by teenagers who think it means baby. The Oxford dictionary's definition of bae is, "A person's boyfriend or girlfriend (often as a form of address)." However, the word in Danish has an entirely different meaning to it. It means poop. Also in Icelandic, it means "bye."

2. Turnt: If your teen is saying this too much, it might be time to have a little chat with them. This slang can mean three things: either drunk, or horny or your child has been partying really hard.

3. FR: At first glance, adults might guess this means French. No, it doesn't. It is an acronym for "forreal." Like when teens say, "I'm coming over fr."

4. Gassed: If someone's in a great mood, they're feeling gassed. But, it can also mean they are extremely mad or excited, depending on the scenario. While talking in terms of weed and getting high, you can say, "off the gas."

5. YOLO: This is a modern slang used quite a lot by teens today. It stands for "You Only Live Once." Teens usually use it when they have done something stupid.

6. TBT: It stands for "Throwback Thursday" and is extremely common on Instagram. But, teens also use it on other days of the week to sound edgy. Throwback Thursday on a Tuesday? Now that would be considered "cool" by their friends.

7. Grind: This is used to express that teens are in the process of doing something difficult. You can be "grinding it" or you can be "on a grind." Being a teen is never easy and that's what this expression cleverly explains.

8. Banger: This word could be a substitute for a rager. For instance, "This party's a banger, this movie is a banger."

9. Lit: People have started saying "Lit AF" to mean that something is raging or is extremely great. Like if you are at a party, you can say, "It's Lit."

10. Catfish: This refers to someone who acts like he or she is another person on social media. For example, "That guy on Tinder was catfished when that girl pretended to be somebody else." It came from the documentary film, "Catfish" (now a series on MTV), where this exact scenario unfolded.

11. Woke: Woke means to be socially and politically aware of whatever is going on and to be able to see the bigger picture and not get influenced easily by social trends, political lies, etc.

12. Flannel Friday: This term is kind of self-explanatory. Teens like to wear flannel on Fridays.

13. Fungry: It was once cool to say hangry, which meant you were so hungry it made you angry. Now, teens are using the mash-up of "f------" and "hungry" to express their hunger.

14. MOS: This is an abbreviation for "Mom is watching over the shoulder." If you see a teen typing this anywhere, you should know that he or she is alerting the person on the other side of the conversation.

15. Trash: Instead of using waste or garbage, teens prefer to say trash. Like, "You're a trash human."

16. Fam: Everyone has a family, but being a cool teenager, you would refer to them as your "fam" because abbreviating stuff is so awesome.

17. Killin' it: Teens think that they are constantly doing awesome stuff that makes them cool, so they had to invent a phrase that basically would be the superlative version of awesome. That's where "killin’ it" is used.

18. Doe: It's like the acronym for "though" but is used for emphasis.

19. Savage: It means someone can do something really savage or be a savage themselves.

20. Mupload that ish: Teens today love to use technology for everything they do, so they naturally have a slang for the process to upload pictures to social media via their mobile phones. They would say, "That picture is awesome, mupload that ish fast!"
