You may have seen your friends posting on Twitter and Facebook recently that they registered for Wander. But what is it?

The truth is that no one really knows. When you go to onwander.com, you are urged to reserve a username on the site that has yet to launch.

Co-founder Jeremy Fisher describes the emerging social media as a way to see the world through other people's eyes to Tech Crunch and explains that once launched, it will be a combination of Tumblr, Pinterest, Yelp, Tripadvisor and Foursquare.

We expect to launch in the next couple of months, but want to release an intermediate experience in the next couple of weeks, Fisher told Tech Crunch.

The company recently launched a blog, commissioning over 50 illustrators to design graphic cards based on their initial impressions of the product.

Wander announced a raise of $1.2 million Thursday from Rob Go's NextView Ventures, Jeff Clavier and Stephanie Pameri's SoftTech VC, SV Angel, Rich Miner's Google Ventures, Collaborative Fund, Red Swan and TechStars.

Rob Go explained in an online post that Fisher is an extremely active user of all things social and local and that Fisher found that there is something missing that impairs our ability to really explore the world around us in a way that is fun, aspirational and also useful. That's what Wander looks to achieve.

Fisher and co-founder Keenan Cummings plan to use the new funds for hiring, and are hoping to build a world class team that can scale the product along with their users when they launch, according to Tech Crunch.
