President Donald Trump named football tycoon Woody Johnson as his ambassador to the U.K. on Thursday. The appointment adds yet another billionaire to the Trump administration, with Johnson family's wealth conservatively estimated at $6.3 billion in July 2015 by Forbes.

Johnson, 70, is the great-grandson of Robert Wood Johnson I, one of the three brothers that founded the pharmaceutical manufacturer Johnson & Johnson in 1886. Woody Johnson bought the New York Jets for $635 million in 2000. The team's value was estimated at $2.75 billion by Forbes in September 2016.

The noted philanthropist has made a habit of donating large amounts of money and supporting Republican politicians. He said in 2012 that he would rather have Republican Mitt Romney win the presidential election than his team the Jets. In 2016, he served as finance chairman for Jeb Bush’s 2016 failed campaign. When Bush dropped out, Johnson threw his support behind Trump.

During the election, Johnson gave $349,000 to Trump Victory, which split donations between Trump’s campaign, the Republican National Committee, and state Republican parties according to a report in Bloomberg on Friday.

On the eve of his inauguration, Trump hinted at the appointment when he introduced Johnson at a luncheon in Washington D.C.

"Congratulations, Woody," said Trump in the presidential ballroom of Trump International Hotel Jan. 19., and introduced the Jets' owner as "the ambassador Woody Johnson, going to Saint James," according to the BBC.

Previously, Trump had used Johnson as a way to attack Jeb Bush during the election saying in January 2016 that if Johnson were backing him, the Jets would have gotten to the playoffs. He also accused Bush of being beholden to big moneyed interests during a speech in February 2016.

"Woody Johnson, owner of the NYJets, is @JebBush’s finance chairman. If Woody would’ve been w/me, he would’ve been in the playoffs, at least," Trump tweeted.

The ambassador post to Great Britain is traditionally seen as a plum diplomatic appointment, which means that it's given to only the big money donors that are connected to political insiders.

The U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May responded positively to the appointment saying that the country looked forward to working with Johnson.

"We are looking forward to working with the new U.S. ambassador once that is confirmed," May's spokesperson said Friday. "His close personal relationship with the president shows the commitment of the administration to the special relationship between our two countries."

When Trump floated Johnson as a possible ambassador in January, Jets fans celebrated the possibility of the owner leaving.
