After not having appeared in a movie since 2013’s “The Family,” some movie fans may have thought Michelle Pfeiffer retired from acting. After starring in films such as “Batman Returns,” Dangerous Minds” and “Scarface,” Pfeiffer’s Hollywood hiatus came as a shock to some.

But according to the 58-year-old actress, she never lost her love for acting, she just became cautious with her roles which led to her not being hired. Appearing on the cover of April’s issue of Interview magazine, Pfeiffer revealed she wanted to be careful with her choices of films.

“I feel really at home on the movie set. I’m a more balanced person honestly when I’m working,” she said. “But I was pretty careful about where I shot, how long I was away, whether or not it worked out with the kid’s schedule. And I got so picky that I was unhirable. And then… I don’t know, time just went on.”

Pfeiffer has now gotten back to acting, appearing in “Where Is Kyra?” which premiered in 2017 at Sundance, and has two films on the way: “Murder on the Orient Express” and “mother!” Speaking with director Darren Aronofsky for the magazine, Pfeiffer said she is now ready to work.

“I’m more open now, my frame of mind, because I really want to work now, because I can. And these last few years I’ve had some really interesting opportunities. And I have this weird synchronicity with Annette Bening,” she said.

According to Pfeiffer, she was set to appear in the film “Bugsy” but fell out of the role which then went to Benning. The actress then revealed Benning was supposed to star in “Batman Returns,” but she ended up replacing her.

While the actress may have been gone from Hollywood for a few years, she claims to have never lost her passion for creating films. “What’s interesting is, there’s always a lot of talk to young people about finding their passion, following their passion… It’s perfectly fine not to have one. But to be lucky enough to know what that is at such a young age is really a blessing.”

Pfeiffer will also star in the upcoming HBO movie, “The Wizard of Lies,” alongside Robert De Niro and Alessandro Nivola. The actress will portray Ruth Madoff, the wife of former NASDAQ chairman, Bernard Madoff. According to HBO, the film “examines Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme – his deception, lies and cover-up, all as the financier’s wife and sons are catapulted into a harsh and unrelenting spotlight.”
