After thanking the Hollywood Foreign Press and FX during his 2017 Golden Globes acceptance speech, actor Donald Glover left many viewers wondering who Migos were when he thanked the hip-hop trio. While accepting the award for best musical or comedy TV series for “Atlanta,” Glover thanked Migos, “not for being in the show, but for making ‘Bad and Boujee.’”

Glover called the song the “best song ever” and got a few laughs from the crowd, but many of the celebs in attendance and viewers at home were confused about the reference. While hip-hop fans are aware of the rap group’s dominance in hip-hop, others may be unfamiliar. Here’s a few things you may not have known about the group:

The Group Was Formed In 2009

While Migos’ success may have just come recently, the group actually formed in 2009 and hail from Lawrenceville, Georgia. The group consists of members Quavo, Takeoff and Offset who are all related to each other. Quavo is the uncle of Takeoff while Offset is the cousin of Quavo.

2013 Was Their Breakthrough Year

In 2013, Migos released their first single “Versace,” which peaked at No. 99 on the Billboard Hot 100, but it wasn’t til later in the year when Drake released his own remix of the song that the track really took off. The group found their song on multiple “best of 2013” lists.

They Starred In “Atlanta”

While Glover wanted to thank them for their music, the group actually appeared in the hit TV series. The group played themselves in the episode, and most of the speaking parts went to Quavo. According to the rapper, it was Glover’s people who got in touch with his people for the guest appearance.

Offset Spent Eight Months In Prison

In 2015, the group’s future was in jeopardy when member Offset along with the other members were arrested for possession of marijuana and various possession of a firearm offenses. While Takeoff and Quavo were released two days later, Offset ended up spending eight months in custody.
