Cash Freeman, an Oklahoma man shot and killed his neighbor Leland Foster who tried to drown his 3-month-old twins in a bathtub at his home, police said Sunday.

Lisa Bratcher, a spokeswoman for Ada police, told NBC News on Sunday the babies were “doing great” after being released from the hospital.

Foster, who lived in Poteau, about 130 miles east of Ada, Oklahoma, entered his house Friday where his estranged wife Michelle Forrells had been staying with their twin babies, Bratcher said.

After entering the house, Foster forced his wife Forrells and his children into the bathroom and pulled out a knife. He then held Forells at knife-point and tried to drown his babies in the bathtub. A 12-year-old girl, who was staying with Forells and her children in the same house, ran to neighbors for help, Bratcher said.

As he got to know about the incident, Freeman immediately grabbed his revolver and rushed to Forells' house to save her and the children. He shot Foster twice in the back and immediately removed the babies from the bathtub.

The police were called in at 1:38 p.m. EDT on Friday. After they reached the crime scene, the babies were rushed to a nearby hospital in Oklahoma City. However, it is unclear if Forells was physically hurt or not. Freeman told NBC affiliate KFOR that he did what he had to do to save the twins. However, he also raised concern that he might get into legal trouble for his actions.

Investigators are reviewing Freeman’s case and whether he should face charges in killing his neighbor Foster, 27, according to Bratcher.

People on social media and other residents of the area called Freeman a hero for the quick action that saved the two infants.

Summer Pierce, Foster's another neighbor condemned his actions and called it “awful.” “I've held the babies, and I've played with them, and I just gave them clothes,” Pierce told NBC affiliate KFOR of Oklahoma City. “I think he did the right thing, because who knows what would happen?” Pierce said. “Who knows what would have happened to the babies if he hadn't intervened? They might not have made it.”

Freeman was questioned and released by the police authorities at the scene of the shooting. Bratcher said that the district attorney would be responsible for determining if the shooting was a justified homicide.

According to police reports, Foster, the accused, had a criminal history and was charged with domestic abuse earlier.

In October 2011, Foster tried to strangle and kill his former girlfriend with a pillow during an argument. Though he later agreed to take his girlfriend to the hospital for treatment, he returned to her apartment and attempted to destroy the woman’s belongings.

According to NewsOK, authorities were called when neighbors reported smoke rising from the house. Foster was arrested and charged with arson and domestic abuse, however, it is not clear whether he was convicted or whether he served in prison for any amount of time for the crime.
