The Navy SEALs has killed Osama bin Laden in the compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Bin Laden, was tracked down and shot to death at the compound by a team of US forces.

U.S. helicopters crossed from Afghanistan into Pakistan on Sunday and dispatched an elite Navy SEALs team. Within an hour, they were able to surrounde a high-walled compound and shot Bin Laden, the mastermind behind 9/11 attacks.

The elite team of Navy SEALs tapped for the job were a group who were stationed at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach.

The team is part of a counterterrorism group very specialized that not anyone can apply for the job. The operatives are recruited from current SEAL teams.

The team was established in response to the 1980 American hostages rescue attempt in Iran, which had been a big failure and demonstrated the need for a counterterrorist team that could operate under the high secrecy level.

The president called the killing of bin Laden the most significant achievement to date in the effort to defeat al Qaeda.

Justice has been done, Obama said.

A small team of Americans carried out the operation, Obama said. After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body.

DNA testing verified and confirmed that it was bin Laden.
