It was Lorde’s time to shine on Sunday night at the 56th Annual Grammys, as the newcomer won two coveted awards for her hit song “Royals.” The pop song was released in 2012, and by the end of 2013, was dubbed one of the year's best songs by media outlets such as Rolling Stone. It was also the second-longest-running No. 1 pop hit of 2013.

The 17-year-old, who is currently in her final year at Takapuna Grammar School in Auckland, looked overwhelmed as she received the awards in dark plum lipstick and a long-sleeved black gown. “This is the one thing that I did not expect the most about tonight. Thank you so much. I think mostly [thanks] to Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake, Sara Bareilles and Katy Perry. I have been so inspired by all of your vocal work at some point in my life, so thank you and thank you all so much,” Lorde said during one of her acceptance speeches.

“Royals” earned her an award for Best Pop Solo Performance and Song of the Year. Lorde quickly attained fame after her single became the No. 1 song in America, making her the first New Zealand solo artist to attain such a feat. Lorde is of Croatian and Irish descent.

The singer, whose real name is Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O'Connor, signed with Universal at the age of 13, after performing and singing throughout her childhood. After several years, Lorde was eventually paired up with writer and producer Joel Little, and within a week together the duo had created three songs, including "Royals."

On Grammy night, Lorde was the most-mentioned star on Twitter. After winning her first two Grammy awards, Lorde tweeted to fans, “I am so grateful for the attention my work has received tonight and this year. Thank you and goodnight [sic].”
