A New York school board president resigned after a hot mic captured him making a joke about a parent, reports the New York Daily News.

Mahopac, New York, school board president Ray Cote was caught making the comments during an April 8 Board of Education meeting. “This one here, chubby wubby, she gets fatter and fatter at every meeting. She really does,” he was recorded saying into a live microphone. The feed of the meeting was being broadcast on the school district's website.

The comments were heard by Deena Bell as she watched video from the meeting. She then uploaded video of the meeting on YouTube. “It totally tells us that he cares nothing for the community that he says he upholds,” Bell told WABC-TV. “Nothing. He cares nothing for us.”

Cote resigned on Tuesday at a Board of Education meeting. In a statement read by Michael Sclafani, the current vice president, Cote apologized for his comments and revealed he will not run for re-election.

"My words were inappropriate and do not reflect my feelings or attitudes," he wrote in the statement. "I will strive to regain the trust and respect of the community."

The Mahopac Board of Education also released a statement on the incident, saying it was "disappointed" by Cote's comments and doesn't "condone" his "lapse of judgment."

Sclafani will assume the duties of the Board of Education president.
