Authorities say that a 19-year-old woman shot and killed on a man’s front porch was likely the victim of a shooter attempting to defend his home, reports WJBK-TV.

Renisha McBride was shot on Saturday Dearborn Heights, Mich. Her family says she walked up to a stranger's home at around 2:30 a.m. following a car accident she had, reports the Detroit News. The homeowner then shot her as she was standing on the porch. Police believe she was shot in self-defense when the homeowner thought she was an intruder. But her family believes she was racially profiled.

“He shot her in the head ... for what? For knocking on his door,” Spinks told the paper. “If he felt scared or threatened, he should have called 911. ... She went looking for help and now she’s dead,” McBride’s aunt Bernita Spinks told the Detroit News.

Police initially told the family that McBride’s body had been “dumped” on the man’s porch, reports WJBK. But they later concluded that she had been shot on the porch as well. The shooter has been identified. But his name has not been released. The Huffington Post reports few details have been released about the shooting suspect or the incident. The Wayne County Prosecutor’s office has been sent a report and will be responsible for charging the suspect.
