One of the (perhaps unintended) results of what seems to be a global fixation with Indian pop culture and Bollywood is the spectacle of prominent women in Europe and North America wearing saris, the traditional Indian dress for women.

A number of celebrities and even politicians wives have “gone Bollywood” in recent years.

While some might consider it an expression of “cultural exchange”, others deride such things as a superficial, a cheap stunt or even as exploitation.

But is it really wrong for women in the west to wear Indian clothes? After all, many Indian women in the west (and in India) wear clothes that are deemed to be “western.”
